Fine Books and Collections - Fine Books & Collections covers a broad range of topics and subjects of interest to book collectors and bibliophiles, from early manuscripts to modern first editions and everything in between. Payment ranges from $100 to $400. 

GRAIN MAGAZINE - Grain Magazine is an internationally acclaimed literary journal, publishing the freshest poetry and prose from Canada, the US, and abroad. Pays up to $225 for fiction or poetry.

INTHEFRAY Magazine- INTHEFRAY is a U.S.-based but internationally aware news and literary magazine that addresses issues of identity and community. Pays a small honorarium for reporting pieces ($75), cultural criticism ($20-$25), book reviews ($20-$25, or a free copy of the book if the reviewer doesn't already own it), visual essays ($45), and travel pieces ($20-$25).

ISLAND Magazine- ISLAND publishes quality short stories, poetry, extracts from forthcoming novels, and articles and essays on topics of social, environmental and cultural significance. he minimum rates paid for contributions to Island are: Poems - $60; short stories - $100; articles and reviews - $100 per 1000 words.

Kaleidoscope Magazine- Kaleidoscope Magazine has a creative focus that examines the experiences of disability through literature and the fine arts.

Literary Traveler- Literary Traveler is seeking articles that capture the literary imagination. Subject matter can be anything artistic or creative. Pays a small honorarium for shorter pieces such as reviews or literary events coverage. Pays on publication.

Mid-American Review - Mid-American Review is an international literary journal dedicated to publishing the best contemporary fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and translations. Usuually pays $10/page, with a maximum payment of $50; contributing authors receive two complimentary copies.

NEW CITY - Newcity is Chicago's news and arts weekly, with a peak print circulation of 70,000, and a combined print/web (www.newcitychicago.com) of several hundred thousand.

NEW ENGLAND REVIEW - We consider short stories, short-shorts, novellas, and self-contained extracts from novels; long and short poems; interpretive and personal essays; book reviews, screenplays, dramatic works, translations, critical reassessments, interviews, and letters from abroad. 

NORTH CAROLINA LITERARY REVIEW - NCLR publishes articles and essays about North Carolina literature, history, and culture. Much of each issue is thematically constructed, so potential contributors should inquire about special feature topics.

One Story - One Story is seeking literary fiction. Because of our format, we can only accept stories between 3,000 and 8,000 words. They can be any style and on any subject as long as they are good. We are looking for stories that leave readers feeling satisfied and are strong enough to stand alone. 

Ploughshares magazine - Ploughshares is published three times a year: mixed issues of poetry and prose in the Spring and Winter and a prose issue in the Fall, with each guest-edited by a different writer of prominence. Payment is upon publication: $25/printed page, $50 minimum  per title, $250 maximum per author, with two copies of the issue and a one-year subscription. 

Reader's Digest- Roughly half the 30-odd articles we publish every month are reprinted from magazines, newspapers, books and other sources. We're always looking for new talent and for offbeat subjects that help give our magazines variety, freshness and originality. 

The Sun - We publish essays, interviews, fiction, and poetry. We tend to favor personal writing, but we're also looking for thoughtful, well-written essays on political, cultural, and philosophical themes. 

Alaska Quarterly Review - Alaska Quarterly Review is a literary journal devoted to contemporary literary art, publishing fiction, short plays, poetry and literary non-fiction in traditional and experimental styles. The editors encourage new and emerging writers, while continuing to publish award winning poets and established writers. 

Apex Magazine - Maximum word length a firm 5,000 words. Payment is .05 per word. Paid within 30 days of publication. 

ARTS & LETTERS - Arts & Letters welcomes your regular submissions from September 1 to April. We accept unsolicited submissions in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and dramatic work. 

BOSTON REVIEW - BOSTON REVIEW is a bimonthly magazine of cultural and political analysis, reviews, fiction, and poetry. Publishes fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and general topics. Payment varies. 

Briarpatch Magazine - Briarpatch Magazine publishes writing and artwork on a wide range of topics, including current events, grassroots activism, electoral politics, economic justice, ecology, labour, food security, gender equity, indigenous struggles, international solidarity, and other issues of political importance. Standard rate of pay is $0.05 per word, paid upon publication. 

Carve magazine - Carve is seeking the highest quality literary short fiction (short stories). We want emotional jeopardy, soul, and honesty. Craft and control are tantamount to our connection to the characters. We pay our contributors as funds allow. In addition to a complimentary copy of the yearly paperback anthology in which your story is published, you will also be paid $20-$50 for your story. 

Chicago Reader - Published since 1971, the Chicago Reader is widely recognized as one of the leading alternative weeklies in the U.S. It specializes in features rather than news, with emphasis on urban issues and politics, arts and culture, and literary journalism that seeks to capture the spirit of contemporary city life. 

Descant magazine - Descant considers submissions of poetry (submit about six poems), short stories, novel excerpts, plays, essays, interviews, musical scores and visual presentations. Standards for acceptance are high. Descant pays a $100 honourarium upon publication. 

El Andar magazine - El Andar publishes the best writing and visual journalism for and about Latinos in North America. El Andar is edited for U.S. Latino readers who want to investigate and understand politics and cultural trends. Payment is negotiated on an individual basis.

FICTION FIX - Fiction Fix provides insightful how-to advice for fiction writers. Our topics cover the various elements of fiction writing, with a focus on ways for writers to strengthen their skills. 

Aurealis

Aurealis is looking for science fiction, fantasy or horror short stories between 2000 and 8000 words. All types of science fiction, fantasy and horror will be considered, but we do not want stories that are derivative in nature, particularly those based on TV series. 


ElectricSpec

ElectricSpec considers any story between 250 and 7000 words with speculative fiction elements. We prefer science fiction, fantasy, and the macabre, but we're willing to push the limits of traditional forms of these genres.


The Christian Century

Open Spaces

Open Spaces is a quarterly which gives voice to the Northwest on issues that are regional, national and international in scope. Readership is thoughtful, intelligent, widely read and appreciative of ideas and writing of the highest quality. 


The Malahat Review

The Malahat Review publishes poetry, short fiction, and creative non-fiction by new and established writers from Canada and abroad as well as reviews of Canadian books. In alternate years, it runs the Long Poem (two $500 prizes) and Novella (one $500 prize) Contests and the poetry and fiction categories of the Far Horizons Award ($500). It also holds an annual Creative Non-fiction Contest (one $500 prize), as well as the annual Open Season Awards (one $1000 prize in each of three categories: poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction).






The Photo Review










CURRENT NEEDS: "Brilliant writing about fine art photography." Pays $50-$250 depending on length; from short book reviews to long essays.

This is YOUR writing magazine, so feel free to contribute your work. We're especially in need of profile pieces about writers or how-to articles on the writing profession.


All we ask is that you keep your submission to no more than 1500 words. Art and photos should be .jpg or .gif and no more than 100kb, if possible.


No attachments, please.


Nonfiction articles for perspiring writers with accompanying artwork  or photo have the best chance of acceptance. No monetary payment at this time but we promote all writers and their work.
